Treasures

Islamic astrolabe from the 11th century. Created for Muslim users for prayer purposes, it was then adapted, translated and corrected for centuries by Hebrew and Western language speakers in Spain, North Africa and Italy.

The inscription on the body bears the words of Neit, tutelary deity of Duamutef, one of the four jackal-headed sons of Horus. Duamutef, personified by the canopus and its lid, was entrusted with the protection of the embalmed stomach of the deceased, still preserved in the jar.
